Star Relays are ancient, megalithic structures built by the Celestials and left abandoned and dormant throughout the far reaches of the Star Wilds galaxy. These colossal circular installations are capable of sending starships across vast distances to another Star Relay, effectively establishing what are now known as Galactic Sectors, with each relay acting as the central heart of its sector. In the early days of spacefaring civilization, the Star Relays were regarded as little more silent relics of a forgotten age.
That perception changed when the Star Relays suddenly powered on, activating simultaneously across the galaxy. This event marks Year 1 of the Galactic Standard date system. Not long after their activation, the secrets of the relays were gradually unlocked, ushering in the era of true intergalactic travel. The study of active Star Relays became the foundation of modern FTL (Faster Than Light) travel and Warp magic-tech, with their underlying principles directly powering modern Warp Drives and intergalactic based transit technologies.
Star Relays operate on a call and release system, requiring operators at both the sending and receiving relays to approve transit before a ship may pass through the circular gate and reappear at its destination. Control over these relays has since fueled countless wars, territorial disputes, and political power struggles, and they continue to shape trade, travel, diplomacy, and conflict across the galaxy.
